SUMMARY:Understanding Oral Cancer
DESCRIPTION:This Event is Hosted by the CVTC Dental Hygiene Club\nAvailable to all dental team members. \nCHIPPEWA VALLEY TECHNICAL COLLEGE\n615 W. CLAIREMONT AVENUE ROOM HEC 117\nTuesday\, May 16 5:30-8:30\nRegistration\, Light Meal and a DH update 5:30-6:30 \nUnderstanding Oral Cancer (2CEU)\nSpeaker: Corinne Jameson-Kuehl RDH\, BS\, OMT\nSpecial Guest: Barb Hoffman-Oral Cancer Survivor \nCourse Description:\nOne person every hour dies from the disease of Oral Cancer. Due to a high instance of late stage detection; less than 50% of those diagnosed will only survive 5 years. The incidence of HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer in a “non-typical” Oral Cancer patient is on the rise; growing to an astounding 70-90% of oropharyngeal cancers being linked to the HPV infection.\nDental professionals are in a unique situation where it is imperative to educate ourselves with the evidence-based Oral Cancer risk factors and HPV prevention education measures. We need better understanding and confidence during our intra and extra oral head and neck examinations; and communication with patients.\nUpon completion of this course the learner will be able to:\n1. Identify patient risk factors associated with Head\, Neck and Oral Cancers.\n2. Recognize oral abnormalities.\n3. Implement a protocol for Head\, Neck and Oral Cancer routine examinations.\n4. Confidently communicate HPV risk and carcinogenic habit prevention with patients in health history interview.\n5. Understand legal responsibility \nRSVP to: dschumacher11@cvtc.edu by May 14\n$25-pay at the door

Dental diseases are not classic infections. New molecular techniques demonstrate caries and periodontal disease are manifestations of dramatic\, sustained shifts in microbial ecology that overwhelm the host immune system.\nMicrobes\, once thought to be key in these disease processes\, may play a minor role\, while relatively unknown species\, or even the entire microbial community\, may be responsible for increased virulence\, sustained acid production\, enhanced inflammation and continued tissue destruction.\nHomeostasis still remains the ultimate goal\, but new disease concepts like dysbiosis\, microbial consorsiums\, inflammophilic bacteria\, commensal pathobionts and keystone pathogens are changing the conversation and challenging how dental disease is viewed today.\nThe erosion explosion – Effects of a modern day witch’s brew\nToday’s sports drinks\, energy drinks\, flavored waters\, bottled teas\, powdered drinks and beverage additives are creating a perfect storm. Modern day drinks\, made from a sophisticated concoction of ingredients\, accelerate tooth erosion\, setting the stage for dentinal hypersensitivity. These drinks also impact the development of dental caries\, a pH-mediated disease.\nLEARNING OBJECTIVES\nAppreciate the difference between classic infections and dysbiosis\nDiscover how commensal microbes become pathobionts\nLearn how enamel and dentin caries differ ecologically\nUnderstand the role of keystone pathogens and inflammophilic microbes in periodontal disease\nUnderstand market trends in beverage sales\nAppreciate the role of pH and titratable acidity\nLearn why sugar free drinks still damage teeth\nCompare “new drink” ingredients to soft drinks that have been around for decades\nDiscover how to make safer beverage choices\nSPEAKER Anne Nugent Guignon RDH\, MPH\, CSP \nAnne is internationally recognized for her numerous contributions to dental hygiene and dentistry over the last four decades. She is a practicing clinician\, columnist\, feature writer and Senior Consulting Editor for RDH Magazine and has authored textbook chapters on ergonomics and power driven scaling. Anne has been involved in the development and testing for a wide range of clinical products and equipment. She holds an adjunct faculty position at the University of Texas Dental School. Anne has received many honors\, awards and recognitions.\nOur 2017 course is supported in part by: 3M\, COLGATE\, CROWN SEATING\, ORASCOPTIC\, and YOUNG DENTAL
