ADHA Position Statement on Dental Access Model Act

Along with ADHA, the Wisconsin Dental Hygienists’ Association strongly opposes the adoption of the Dental Access Model Act, which allows dental assistants to perform scaling procedures. The model lacks evidence supporting its safety, efficacy, and appropriateness, potentially compromising patient care and safety. The model may enhance productivity for private dental practices but does not effectively address the critical issue of expanding access to care, particularly for underserved populations. The WIDHA emphasizes that dental hygienists possess extensive training and clinical expertise, enabling them to provide a wide range of preventive and therapeutic services. These services go far beyond basic scaling, including comprehensive assessments, periodontal care, oral health screenings, and evidence-based patient education—essential components for maintaining both oral and overall health.

The Association urges members to join the ADHA in opposing this Act and advocates for evidence-based solutions that prioritize patient safety and improve access to quality oral healthcare.
